A Story — Coming to America

I came to America after graduating Art School. I had $400 in savings and brought an Epson printer in a brown pillowcase as my carry-on luggage. I was supposed to stay three months. I used a fake name for my first few jobs—my new American best friend was fortuitously called Emily—so she would deposit my checks and give me the cash. When my 90 day tourist visa ran out, I went to Mexico City to party with a friend from Art School, Katri, who’s brother owned a bar in Condesa. Then I came back and did it again 90 days later. For years. I’m telling you this story because yesterday I got my citizenship. Do NOT tell my mom. 🇺🇸
