My absolute favorite place to be is in the middle of the ocean on the FV Anna Mary, 80 miles offshore, as the sun is coming up. 90s classic rock is playing on the radio, the rotting bait stinks, Little Anthony is cooking us a gourmet breakfast, Johnny Load is likely complaining a part of his body aches, the deckhand — whoever he is this trip — is smoking something. And I’m standing on the bow trying to answer these two questions: How did I get so lucky to be here? Why the fuck am I here? Three years later, I’m halfway to figuring out the answers.
